Leonardo Drew
Contemporary Artist
Brooklyn, New York

I want the [object] to live, to go through me and come out the other end…it’s like I become the weather and take these things to the next place.
— Leonardo Drew

Leonardo Drew was born in Tallahassee, Florida in 1961, and grew up in Bridgeport, Connecticut. Although often mistaken for accumulations of found objects, his sculptures are instead made of “brand new stuff”—materials such as wood, rusted iron, cotton, paper, and mud—that he intentionally subjects to processes of weathering, burning, oxidation, and decay. Whether jutting out from a wall or traversing rooms as freestanding installations, his pieces challenge the architecture of the space in which they’re shown.

Leonardo is featured at “The Drop” a gallery show, curated by Sima Familant, located in the lobby of the Ellen Browning Building, Portland, Ore.

HAMMAR

“I've told thousands of stories throughout my career — often about people who lived or died bravely in the face of sickness and disease.

But the story I started telling myself as far back as I can remember took just three words.”

“I’m not enough.”

“Teddy Roosevelt said it differently: “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

“In a way, my story was a blessing. I showed up everyday and pushed the limits of my talents. So many blessings followed.

Now, as I stare at my 70th birthday, I can’t say I never hear my story. But I’m working on a happy ending….”

DONKéO

Brenda Péo
Animal Artist
Saint David, Arizona

Doing something imaginative every day is good for my mind and soul. I love painting donkeys because I am attracted to their long fuzzy ears, their honesty, unconditional love and their quirkiness...even if they have experienced the worst of treatment by humans, they can somehow put that behind them and learn to trust again.

Donkeys are amazing creatures, captivating and really smart. When I started painting them, I found their eyes to be so inviting and calm, and when I add that last twinkle and they look back at me…WOW, I love it

Nick’s Story

_RTP2625 a Final.jpg

Nick Zeller
Husband - Filmmaker - Athlete

Letter from Nick…

“Hello friend...I imagine you’re busy, freaking weird times we live in, one consolation is I’m not likely to be around for the shit that is coming down, food shortages, riots, Covid, everyone with a gun, politics a mess and so on. Not gonna miss watching us all sink as we fight over scraps and the whole world melts down.

I’m good with this, got more time after the discovery of melanoma in 2014 than I ever expected; it’s been gravy for years with good health and a wonderful new partner, but I always expected I’d get to this stage eventually and now it’s here.

I’ve had more advantages than most, born white into a middle class family. I have always been aware of how hard life was for most folks. The real heroes are the people who go to work each day, pay their taxes, raise their kids, and contribute to the betterment of our communities despite all the obstacles society throws up to thwart them.

So no regrets, a few tears, some major losses, some incredible wins, a life well lived, can’t argue with that and can’t change anything, including my genes, which have led me to this point.... and now it’s the end game.

I hope to still be in good shape for months if not longer, feel fine, still riding my bike but slower, it’s all good these days, you’d never know this was growing inside me unless I told you.

Please feel free to share this if you like with folks who might know or remember me. I’d like folks to take melanoma and sun exposure seriously, use sunscreen or better, cover up; get checked at least yearly by a dermatologist and live your life a fully as you can.”

Nick

Mavis Zins
Tiki-Toss Champion
Milwaukie Elks #142

Hi, my name is Mavis Zins. I am nine years old and I am in the 4th Grade. I play many sports but one sport in particular I find very Interesting and fun is Tiki-Toss because it is challenging. In Tiki- Toss you try to get a ring on a hook but you have to align the ring to the hook and give your toss enough power to get all the way to the hook. Having a technique makes it easier to play. My technique is to stand on my tippy toes and raise my arms over my head and hold the ring up as high as I can. Then I align the ring to the hook; I drop it and let gravity take over. When I finally hook it, I feel so glad that I kept trying.

Caleb Davis
Eugene, Oregon

My name is Caleb Davis. I’m a 17 year old trumpet player born and raised in Eugene Oregon. I’ve been playing trumpet for almost 6 years now. I take my biggest inspiration from a wide variety of players like Clifford Brown, Booker Little, Ambrose Akinmusire, Sean Jones, etc. I try my best to represent all of those players in my playing and to pay homage to the musicians before me that started one of the few true American art forms that is commonly known as “jazz”. I’m not the best at expressing my emotions straight to people’s faces(or at least I feel like I’m not that great at it), so the trumpet and music is my outlet to try to tell other people how I’m feeling. Recently I’ve been working at my parents’ cabinet shop, Davis Cabinets, which has been in the family for almost 50 years. My parents have supported my trumpet playing since day one, so I always try my best to give back to them the support they’ve given me all these years.

_Caleb Davis

Caleb has received Outstanding Soloist awards from the UO Jazz Festival, West Salem Jazz Festival, and the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

THE ARTIST
Roger Hopkins
Desert Hot Springs, California

Roger Hopkins has been a stone sculptor and landscape artist in Desert Hot Springs, Calif., for the past seven years. For the previous 30 years, he was a stonemason in Massachusetts, working on everything from modest dwellings to hundred-million-dollar estates. In that time, he developed a reputation for expertise that came to the attention of the producers of two PBS series, “This Old House” and “The Victory Garden,” on which he became a frequent participant. More recently, he served as a member of the highly specialized design teams for the PBS science series “Nova,” where he and others tried to figure out how the Egyptian pyramids, obelisks and other large stone structures were built. Through the years, Hopkins developed his skills as a sculptor by installing at least one of his creations on every landscape job he designed and built. He now specializes in sculptures that can be useful in homes or play major roles in any landscaped space.
